. well, good morning, thank you for waking up to a brand- new day with us, how is the weather, steve? we are going to get a lot of cold air and it is still on the way, it is in advance of the system and it is going to be a very cold day, upper 40s and 50s and a possibility of thunderstorms, here is sal. good morning, traffic is going to be slow in some areas and the weather will play a role, you can see traffic is busy and also this morning we are looking at 880 westbound and traffic is moving along nicely. let's go back to the desk. as steve mentioned, it could create a rainy commute for many of you, alex savage is covering the dramatic change in weather following a very nice three-day weekend, alex?

>> reporter: it really was, it was a beautiful comfortable three-day weekend in the bay area and it is a true weather system that has moved into the bay area right now. as you can see the rain has sort of tapered off and let me show you what it looks like. we are here on highway 101 in petaluma at the highway exit and this is what it looks like, just about an hour or so ago. drivers need to be prepared if this system moves across. give yourself extra time to get across. the roads will be wet and some areas could expect up to a half inch of rain by the time it is all said and done today. this is exactly what they are waiting for since it is a dry january especially down in the south bay, they need the rain the most. santa clara is 50% full right now. it is good news, more rain is expected to start coming down

rain is right now. tara moriarty is live in mt. diablo where a huge tree fell on a million dollar home even before the storm hit. >> reporter: that's right, and a service crew will come up here and try to remove the rest of the tree and you can see it is right on the top of a house and also damaged an suv as well as the golf cart. >> reporter: around lunchtime the person to heard a massive crack and a tree five feet in diameter fell on the family's home. the largest branches fell feet from the kitchen where wendy was standing. >> my roof fell in next to me and i froze. i thought is the rest of the house going to come down on me.

afternoon at palo alto city hall. a major announcement is expected about the plans of the san francisco giants to develop a waterfront urban village. it includes plans to build apartments, shops, restaurants and offices right along pier 38. it will create thousands of jobs but it still needs the approval of the port commission. mayor ed lee is expected to talk about this at a news conference at 10:00 a.m. matt cain will kickoff the new season by facing clinton kershaw. cain led them to a world series for the giants and the opening day ends four straight seasons where tim tim lincecum opened

weather advisory over the bay area mountains until 3:00 so it goes from lake county all the way down and much colder temperatures in fact we have gone to 70 degrees on the high and we are beginning to thicken up here and also it is turning from a mixed precipitation in mendocino, it is probably a good bet they will get some snow up into lake county and this is a cold system. we had some snow over in novato and this is a weak band in advance and the main core does not arrive until later on. you can see towards certain areas, it has picked up sneer santa rosa so -- picked up near santa rosa, it is picking up and high temperatures will struggle. this system is coming in late morning early afternoon and

once we get some of that cold air and the dynamics in advance, the problem is there is no moisture behind it so it will be today and that's it but it's on its way and we have a ways to go so it is making a track towards us. mostly cloudy, low snow levels, 40s and 50s on the temperatures and not much change through tomorrow and we to look breezy at the end of the weekend. marcus and asia were mixed losing mother than 1% and south korea finished with modest gains. checking in on our numbers, markets were closed for president's day and we are getting a new read and it does

potential police force. oral board paddles are made up of police officers and a city employee and they will grill the officer candidates to see if they have the right fit for the police department and it is a key part of the interviewing process. in cal, they had more to say about that controversial court side incident. he said he let his emotions get the best of him when he shoved the man. they reprimanded the coach and leyland said that punishment does not go far enough. he wants a suspension. >> shoving and pushing a student is not something any teacher should be doing and if this were a regular classroom, i will tell you that the professor or the teacher would be suspended.

heights, upper 40s and 50s, here is sal. traffic is looking good on highway 4 coming to the willow pass grade as you drive through northbound traffic 280 is off to a good start, let's go back to dave and pam. it is already snowing in the sierra and in fact this is a live picture you are looking at, it has been snowing off and on since late last night. snow levels could drop as low as 1,500 feet making driving hazardous at times. up to 10 inches of snow is expected and we will bring you a live report coming from the sierra at 6:00. it is expected to be a rainy storm as the first one moves in in many weeks. it started at 4:30 a.m. while marin county reservoirs

by signing up for mobile www.ktvu.com. a union pacific freight train hit and killed a man last night. here is more from janine de la vega and she will tell us whether or not it will affect the morning commute. >> reporter: this fatality lasted into the overnight hours and the tracks are clear and you can see the train is on its way through here. there will be no impact to the morning commute and everything is running smoothly. everything is clearly marked as a railroad crossing and union pacific eif i can is report -- union pacific is reporting they are transporting here. they walked in front of it and he was struck and killed and transit police are investigating to try to figure out if this was an accident or

suicide. the train was carrying lumber and it is believed the only witnesses may have been the train crew. three caltrans were delayed at the scene of the investigation and the body was recovered by the coroner. the man's identity is not being released yet but back out here live, union pacific reiterates, there is even a sign here saying, there is a $271 fine when you go around the gate, i have a call into a spokesperson at union pacific and we are still waiting to hear back from him, ktvu channel 2 morning news. a man involved in a weekend boat crash has died from his injuries. 68-year-old harry holt tower was on a boat that collided with a golden gate bridge ferry

and the operator of the boat remains in the hospital and the coast guard is investigating who is at fault but they believe the speed of the boat remains to be a factor. a massive oak tree fell on a million dollar home. tara moriarty has more on the damage to this million dollar home, tara? >> reporter: the homeowner said he had the tree inspected regularly and you can imagine how shocked he was when the tree came crashing down on his home. afternoon they will have a crane remove the tree completely. they heard a massive crash on a 3 to 400-year-old heritage oak tree fell on a home near the city of alamo. the largest branches fell just

feet from the kitchen where wendy burman was standing. it was one of the largest trees and it covered a good portion of the roof. >> reporter: the multi-million dollar home was red tagged and coming up in our next half hour, we will tell you how despite their brush with death, the burmans are still maintaining their sense of humor. city leaders in the east bay community of pittsburgh they are expected to take a final vote on a medical marijuana city ban. they gave initial approval last month and the staff approved a citywide ban to help prevent robberies and burglaries and

other criminal activity and if it is approved, the ordinance will take affect. they could approve an ordinance to shut down internet cafes and they double as illegal gambling operations. three cafes have been offering three sweep steak games online. the video include poker, roulette and blackjack. letters were shutout telling them about those operations and at least one of those cafes was already closed. they have improved -- approved a 45 moratorium as they have already been lookinged at. now redwood city will consider a switch to the alternative. they have considered single use by retailers except restaurants

to go some rain has developed, it is light and the main core come in later. a winter weather advisory is out for the bay area mountains for snow. around 2000 feet, it takes us until 3:00 going north to south and it started already up in parts of mendocino county. you can see it is up towards eureka and what we are getting in advance of that is light and it's already juicing things up a little bit back into marin county and back to san francisco as well over to richmond, berkeley, over to the san rafael bridge and what does show up on radar is back in san francisco heading to daily city as well. it is extremely cold and it is coming right over your house and mine which means temperatures 30s and 40s and

. here is a quick look at some of the top stories we are following, a man walked in front of a train as it was crossing in front of churchill avenue. this morning's commute is not affected by last night's accident. a home has been red tagged after a massive oak tree crashed down on it and they are worried the home will collapse. nobody is being allowed into

that house. an the olympic track star oscar pistorius will be back in court to continue his bail hearing. the courtroom had to take several breaks into the night after oscar pistorius broke down into tears. he admitted in the hearing he shot his girlfriend but said he did it because he thought she was a robber. a former adviser said it was probably a mistake for the white house immigration plan said senior adviser said white house officials would take it back if they could. the leaked proposal was published over the weekend and the white house said it was merely a backup plan incase they were able to come up with an immigration plan of its own. they want to give back to local school districts. in his state of address he said he is against the current

practice if students don't perform well on standardized tests. they have large numbers of income and low english income students. a woman reported being raped and beaten on campus. here is a police sketch released by the suspect and the victim describes them as white between 30 and 40 years old, 5- foot 11 with black hair, green eyes and a tattoo on his bicep. she walked alone on a wooded trail which happened 12:30 in the afternoon. >> the victim did not know the assailant and it happened in the middle of the day so that is shocking for the campus and quite unusual. police on santa cruz said

patrols are holding a public forum where they will be holding a meeting on the attack and some other reason incidents. they passed four gun control measures and it limits ammunition magazines to 15 rounds and requires background checks on all purchases. it make purchasers pay for their own background checks and conceals firearms at stadiums. it now goes to the state senate. because has been formally charged -- bow wheres has -- bowers has been formally charged. he was about to board a plane and police found a 40 caliber handgun. the charge is serious enough, he could be sent to prison for 14 years and faces nfl sanctions. they are considering hiring a team to work on the city's

homeless problem. today the city will decide on a one year, or $72,000 contract with a palo alto based nonprofit to help homeless people find work and rebuild their lives. the city will also pick up track and clean up the city. tonight oakland city council is due to vote on a resolution to keep them from patrolling the city of oakland. they would pay the chp $162,000 over two months to provide 10 chp officers. the chp officers started helping the oakland police department back in november but the chp has reportedly been paying the bill. finding a donor can be especially challenging suffering from life-threatening conditions, coming up finding help for a man with a bay area man with a rare form of leukemia and how it can help

here, cold rain upper 50s on the temperatures and it will not get much warmer. rain will decrease only about a quarter of an inch, cool breezy pattern will take us to the weekend. there are new signs on battery, they found a problem with the secondary battery problem which was forced to make an emergency landing last month. the battery has slight signs of swelling in two of the batteries 8 cells. office depot appears to be in serious talks to emerge with office max, both companies are boosting profitability. they are increasing leverage with suppliers and they are already competing with stables which is the biggest office supply company and now there is more coming in from wal-mart costco and target. they are trying to remove
